Medical Acupuncture and Low Level Laser Therapy
Helping to Restore Balance
Acupuncture is one form of traditional Chinese Medicine involving the placement of fine needles into the skin for the treatment of various conditions. The aim of acupuncture is to restore the body's balance or homeostasis. Research supports the effectiveness of acupuncture, especially for musculoskeletal conditions and chronic pain. At Kotara Family Practice medical acupunture treatments (including non-needling treatments) are performed by Dr Zinny McTackett. Dr McTackett is an experienced GP who has completed additional specialist training in Medical Acupuncture, giving you the benefit of both western and traditional Chinese medicine. Acupuncture is generally very safe. Serious side-effects are very rare - less than 1 per 10,000 treatments. All acupuncture treatments use sterile disposable needles.
Low Level Laser Therapy, or LLLT, uses low power red and near infra-red light to help treat muscular and joint conditions as well as wounds. Light beams are applied directly over the skin in the area of injury. Stressed or damaged cells absorb the light more readily, stimulating changes within the cells which allow for increased tissue repair. A probe or wand emitting the low level laser light is placed on the area of injury and/or specific acupuncture points for a short period of time (often no more than 20 seconds). LLLT is also very safe. Unlike the high intensity surgical lasers, LLLT uses low intensity light and does not heat or cut the skin. The effects of LLLT are photochemical - like photosynthesis in plants - the light is used to improve cell metabolism and reduce inflammation.
How long does a treatment session take?
Each session with Dr McTackett will require a 30 minute appointment. In your first session, Dr McTackett will complete a full assessment of your condition, discuss your treatment plan and address any of your concerns before treatment begins. Subsequent sessions will involve treatment and review of your progress.
How many sessions will I need and how often?
The frequency and number of treatment sessions will depend on your specific condition and on your response to treatment. Generally speaking, acute problems such as ankle sprains may require 2-3 sessions per week for 1-2 weeks, whereas chronic conditions such as long-standing back pain may require one session every week or fortnight for several visits. Dr McTackett will ensure that you have all the information that you need to make an informed decision about your treatment. Ultimately you will decide on the number of treatments.
What is the cost of treatment?
We aim to keep acupuncture and LLLT accessible to everyone. However, this is a specialised medical service provided by a highly qualified medical practitioner and we do need to cover the cost of consumables and equipment needed to treat your condition. Your intital assessment session will be fully bulk-billed to give you the opportunity to decide if medical acupuncture will suit your needs. Subsequent treatment sessions will be privately billed.
